To establish this lab we will proceed through the following phases:
- Lab Design
- Lab Deployment
- Teacher Training/Indoctrination
- Support Staff Education
- Lab Maintenance
PHASE I- Lab Design
June 2, 2003 through August 22, 2003
Some Constraining Factors
- Lab will occupy two locations (LabA & LabB). Server room has separate location.
- Distance between labs is under 300 feet.
- Two servers (dual 2.8GHZ Xeon and dual 3.0GHz Xeon each with 1GB RAM)
- Two 24 port LinkSys 100 Mbps switches available.
- Internet feed is ADLS at 3MbpsX640Kbps.
- Diskless clients are at least Pentium II-333MHz (128MB RAM) with 100Mbps Intel Pro100 NIC.
- Will use Linux Terminal Server Project packages where possible.
Lab Design
- Network Diagram
- Configuring the firewall (hostname is hilltop.emeryci.org).
- Install SuSE 8.2.
- Use YaST2 to configure NIS (domain emeryci.org), NFS (export /home), Firewall.
- Configuring the LTSP Servers.
- Install SuSE 8.2 on both servers. Here we selected all packages in the SuSE selection window.
- Set hostnames to jack and jill.
- Configure each server as NFS and NIS clients.
- Install LTSP RPM packages for core, kernel, local_apps, x_core and x_fonts.
- Run /opt/ltsp/templates/initialize.
- Configure KDM so local users cannot shutdown servers.
- Restart KDM so it accepts XDMCP requests.
- Edit /etc/dhcpd.conf on both servers to match clients.
- Edit /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf to match clients.
