We will equip an Ontario Secondary school with an Open Source lab to accomodate a typical high school class. The lab software will include the latest offerings from the Open Source community and will be integrated into the test school's curriculum to the extent that we could study its impact on teaching and learning.
Our goal is to show that Open Source software is not only a viable alternative to proprietary solutions but can add real value to the teaching/ learning experience as well as significantly reduce technology costs. To accomplish our goal we will
We intend to make this lab a model for other Ontario schools should they decide to implement Open Source within their domains. We will invite interested parties from the Ontario Secondary School System and from the Ministry of Education to free seminars and demonstrations to showcase our ongoing work and to present Open Source as a viable, valuable and cost-effective technology that is mature and available now for use in our schools. [1] Any research or project requiring the use of the Open Source lab must be approved by Seneca's Center for Development of Open Technology |
