PASCO Science Workshop 500 Interface (SW500i)What's the deal? Many high schools across Ontario and abroad have these little black boxes they use in their science labs. These cute toys are made to measure all sorts of things, such as temperature, distance, pH, speed, you name it. Students/staff use them to observe/demonstrate various effects of phisical and chemical stimulae but the software they have now is too complex to be usefull. Linux club members see this as an opportunity. Isn't it an interesting challenge to write a piece of software that's exceptionally easy to use, customised to suit the needs of students and teachers in high schools? The results of open source software developement often surpass everyone's expectations, including the originators of the project. Now we are writing software for use by the Emery CI but who knows, maybe it will be usefull to hundreds of other schools. The team Don't tell my systems teacher, John Selmys does the gathering of requirements, soliciting of feedback and handles all contact with Emery. This is only one of his open-source initiatives. Me, Andrew. I do the coding but as we get closer to developing a GUI I hope to establish a close relationship with Emery to make sure they get what they want and not what I feel is right. The staff at Emery Collegiate Institute* has been very helpfull, providing us with one of the interfaces (in the picture) and feedback. If you have a desire to hack the secrets out of the little black box, your assistance will be appreciated. Go to the Linuxclub* website for meetings info.
